This summer we saw Illusionist Adam Trent at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. If you haven’t been there it’s a huge venue and it was pretty crowded for a “magic show.”

The show itself was entertaining, especially for my boys ages 8 and 10.

BUT as a parent, this show was really inspiring and left me in tears for an unexpected reason.

First of all, throughout his show he talks about his journey to get to that moment. I didn’t know anything about him but it turns out he had a love of music and a love for magic at a very early age. He wanted to combine those two things, which he has done.

Which is so inspiring because if you are a parent, or even a grown up following your passions, you know sometimes you love more than one thing and they don’t always go together.

I remember when I was young, one Halloween I wanted to be both a hula girl and tweetie bird. Those are two completely different things, but my Mom, God love her, let me wear a bright yellow tweetie bird plastic face mask with the elastic string to hold it in place AND a hula skirt and bikini top. I must’ve been quite the sight! It was cold that year so I also wore a white turtle neck under the bikini top, lol.

Anyway, being a multi-passionate person and witnessing someone else combine their passions and be living their dream was very inspiring both as a Blogger/Career Mentor and as a parent.

Which is not what made me cry though.

It was toward the end of the show. He played a video of himself doing magic over the years from childhood forward and then talked about his Aunt.

He said she was his biggest supporter. She went to every show, even the ones where his magic tricks failed. In nursing homes, living rooms, anywhere he could practice his magic she was there to support him and be proud.

Sadly she died young and did not get to see him in a big venue like Segerstrom.

Her early passing isn’t what made me cry either, though it is sad.

It was her SHOWING UP that did it – What a legacy to leave!

Of all the things we can leave behind, she left behind her unconditional support. Her presence at every show cheering him on.

I have a lot of friends who have chosen to be awesome Auntie’s rather than parents themselves and that is NO SMALL THING.

The support of a parent or family member is priceless.

And the best part is that it is free!

You don’t have to go to a store, wonder what to get, or where to find it.

You just show up and applaud them, how easy is that?

I’m going to have to keep showing up even when my 10 year old just told me he is practicing to get his arms stronger so he can do contortion on hand canes and throw knives with his feet! Hopefully he meant rubber ones!!!

How about you? What little things do you do that you know mean more than ANYTHING to someone special. Is it listening? Hugging them and saying “I love you”? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

One of us wasn’t sure he wanted to be at the show, but you can see him happy after it, lol.
