My five-year old wanted a Batman-themed room, but we compromised on a Super Hero theme instead. I was concerned we would get everything Batman and he would decide he liked Captain America or The Flash better. So far we have Batman bedding, a few pictures, and now these DIY star curtains that fit the comic book style, but are flexible enough to “change up” as he grows.

The great thing about these stars is that they are held in place with hot glue, look adorable, and would work for either a boy or girl’s room. There is a star pattern below as a free download.

For these curtains I used these super easy snap-in grommets. I felt like it gave the curtains a little something extra.

More super hero ideas are in progress and I can’t wait to share them with you. If you like these curtains, your sharing of this post it is greatly appreciated!

HOW TO MAKE THE STAR CURTAINS:

MATERIALS USED:

  • Snap-in grommets -these curtains have 8 grommets (4 per panel)
  • White Fabric – this is a jersey knit but I would recommend a linen. The jersey knit gets wrinkled fast.
  • Felt for the stars – less than 1/4 yard of red, light blue, and black (bought at JoAnn’s)
  • Hot Glue/Glue Gun

OPTIONAL ITEMS:

GETTING STARTED:

Make sure to measure your window correctly!!! I measured exactly the size of the window, forgetting to leave an extra four inches length at the bottom. Luckily I had black material on hand and sewed it right to the white material and ended up loving the look.

The one thing I will say about me and sewing is that I’ve adopted the motto “don’t let perfection get in the way of a perfectly good project!” I have very little patience with ironing and pinning, but I do love to see a final product that is unique. If you have a JoAnn’s Fabric and Craft Store, they have online coupons where you can usually get 20-40% off (you can use them from your phone too!). It’s a great way to fund your sewing mistakes projects at a discount.

I added blackout material to my white fabric in an effort to keep my son sleeping later (it worked a little), but have since seen that Pottery Barn Kids has white black-out curtains that would make this a “no sew” project, if that’s more your speed.

ADDING GROMMETS:

I sewed the blackout material at the sides and left a space at the top for the grommets so I didn’t have to cut through double the fabric (once it was folded over for the grommets). I added the grommets as close to the beginning of this project as possible because I was skeptical whether or not they really worked. I did not want to go through all the effort of making curtains and then ruin them at the end!

The grommets are that easy though. I have to say I think snap-in grommets make my list of favorite things. They just snap in but make the curtains look professional. You simply place them on your fabric deciding where you will want them. If you haven’t done your side seams of the curtains yet, remember to leave room for the seams. These grommets come with a pattern to trace. You make the circle with pencil, cut out the hole and snap in the grommet. Super easy!

BLACK STRIPE AT BOTTOM:

Measure out the black. Add one additional inch to each side for the seam (for these curtains it’s 7 inches for a 5 inch stripe). I used no sew hem tape to fold over the top of the black fabric to make a one inch seam. Once I had that seam done with the tape (I spaced pieces every 5 inches or so), I pinned it to the front of the white curtain, with the black seam side down, and sewed with black thread right on the front. You cannot see the seam because of the black thread and it attached perfectly. For the bottom I used a few pieces of the hem tape too to keep the seam in place before I sewed it.

CUT OUT STARS:

Download this star shape as a pattern: 3-in-1 Star Pattern. Save it to your computer and open it in either Photoshop or as a PDF file. It has all three sizes in one pattern, so as you trace each, you can cut it down to the smaller size (and then repeat).

I started by tracing the stars on the back side of my felt material with a sharpie, but then quickly discovered a better way. I used some yellow felt I had on hand to make a “pattern star.” I held the pattern to the felt and cut around it.

Sew or hot glue. I figure since these curtains are in a boy’s room they will take a beating. I started by sewing the black felt star to the colored star by simply tacking each point of the star. I did one stitch coming up from the backside and back, then the next stitch at the next point. I did the majority of the stars this way but later decided the curtains needed a few more stars. I was over sewing at that point and used hot glue. The stars I hot glued instead of sewing are holding up just as well and the ones that were sewn! Go hot glue!

Lay out your pattern. It’s key to remember the curtains will be side by side when they are hanging up. Once I had one side completed, I laid them side by side and decided a mirrored image looked best. My dog is okay, by the way, she loves to sleep where I’m working.

Hot glue on your stars and done!

I hope you find these curtains add some cuteness to any room.
